about ims
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), or Dry Needling, is a needling technique used to decrease neuropathic (irritated nerves) pain following injury. This is done by stimulating stretch receptors in the muscle, producing a reflexive relaxation, or muscle lengthening. The electrical potential produced by activating the stretch receptor in the muscle stimulates the irritated nerve to function normally again. This treatment helps to address a number of tissues in the body including muscle, fascia, and nerves, all of which can contribute to pain and dysfunction.
Receiving IMS as a treatment can often be described as experiencing a muscle cramp. This sensation is the result of the stretch receptors in the muscle being stimulated.
